Couple killed in downpour

An elderly couple died on the spot after their house was grounded by a downpour, that also demolished several houses in Igunga District, Tabora Region, leaving 25 households homeless.
The incident occurred over the weekend at Lugugu Village, Itumba Ward in the district, according to the village executive officer, Hussein Mohamed, who named the deceased couple as Ernest Makala, 90, and Perpetua Petro,80.
He said the husband died on the spot when their house fell down while his wife died a few hours later at Igunga District hospital.
“They were in their house when the downpour grounded their unstable house,” he added.
He said members of 25 households whose houses were also demolished, were being sheltered by their relatives and neighbours.
The district hospital’s doctor in charge, Dr Sono Nyaga, confirmed to have received the body of the late Makala while that of his wife was also preserved at the hospital while their burial preparation was underway.
He said both deceased had severe head injuries and excessive loss of blood they sustained in the accident.
The Itumba Ward executive Mr Twalib Salum, warned families to avoid living in houses which  were close to big trees during the downpour which, he said most often, has been accompanied by fierce winds.
